Sonder n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.
Receiving my voting card for the EU election prompted med to find out some more about what is going on, so now I feel like I know a little bit more.
I know that this time around Sweden get 21 seats rather than the 20 we had before. Nine large (the classic Swedish ones that are around every election) parties have signed up 331 candidates to fight it out as well as an additional 76 small parties (that no one ever heard of).
needs to get a minimum of 4% of the Swedish votes to get access to their seat,
and all the parties are a part of a grouping within the EU Parliament.
I think to
make sense out of what happens when I vote for a party; it’s more relevant to
see what the grouping they belong to wants rather than what election lines they
are feeding me here in Sweden.
Below is a
list of the 9 larger parties, my translation within brackets and the EU Parliament
grouping in bold.
Vänstern (The left) GUE/NGL
Feministiskt Intiativ (the feminists) S&D
Socialdemokraterna (social democrats) S&D
Miljöpartiet (The environmentalist party) Gröna/EFA
Centern (The center) Alde
Liberalerna (The liberals) Alde
Moderaterna (More right than the liberals, not as right as the Swedish democrats) EPP
Kristdemokratern (The Christians) EPP
Sverige Demokraterna (The Swedish democrats that might have to check the word democracy in the dictionary) ECR
Next step: figure out what each grouping mean. If I have the patience
(and if I can figure it out) I’ll share my findings with you guys…
I bragged yesterday about how good I’ve gotten at programming my coffee machine so I could wake up to the smell of coffee…guess who forgot last night! And guess who overslept this morning. I think we can see a pattern, big reminder to me to sort that out tonight as the instant stuff isn’t the same. As promised I still took the time for a cupper even though I was late.
news I got my voting card for the coming European Union election. I have heard
about it, I know it would happen, I will just have to admit that I have no clue
on what’s going on and that is not good.
Since we are living in a world where the rightwing winds are strong, people are becoming more hateful and want to move back from open borders to closed ones with countries only containing the “right people”, this is more important than ever. I do not want a Sweden with closed borders containing only Swedish hateful people that think they are on top of the world with the right to look through their noses on everyone else.
So what do I know this far?
It’s on the 26th of May, so I will be back from my vacation.
We elect who to represent us in the EU Parliment for the next 5 years.
You need to be EU citizen to be allowed to vote.
I vote for the (Swedish) party I think should represent us.
I can vote for a specific person.
The party need to have at least 4% of the votes in order to have a seat at the Parliment.
Wow, now all that is left is to figure out who to vote for. I’m not sure I recovered from the Swedish election we had last fall, so this is going to be a though one. I can take the easy way out and just vote for the same party this time around…or not.
I stayed up late last night to sleep late today, thus I woke up 8:20 – fantastic. My race this eve starts at 10PM, so a long day that includes hydrating properly, and of course it happens to be what feels like one of the hottest days of the year.
Eating properly, both breakfast and pasta lunch, need those carbs (I think it’s carbs anyhow) to manage the race!
I’ve spent most of the day packing up stuff for tomorrow’s flee market as well as throwing things out. How about some canned food that expired in 2013? I can’t believe how much stuff I have just sitting around, the worst being the clothes with the price tag still there. Something needs to be done!
With the weather being so nice had to get some fresh air and my daily dose of Mango Frapino, while checking out when they are setting up for tonight.
It’s a very slow day, kind of like waiting for Santa. I’ve gotten so much done and still there’s five hours before I start 😦
It doesn’t happen often now a days, however today I’m taking the bus to work.
The Malmö police seem to be broke at the moment as they are raiding bikes without lights and handing out hefty fees, and my front light have been broken for a while. They probably need extra money so they can pay for the staff doing the passport controls when you arrive from Denmark.
Dropping of the bike, getting a coffee and then exiting the building, super efficient, only to see the bus leave.
So technically I’m not bussing it yet, I’m waiting for the next bus.
This morning I was running around my apartment to get the last bits done that you do before you go away for the weekend. As I picked up my stuff to head out the door I stopped and asked myself if I should check and make sure my ATM card was in my purse in order to ensure that I avoided another incident like the last time I went to Gotham City, and then I thought to myself; no, I’m sure it’s in there. Then I headed out to meet Da studybuddy for a luxury coffee before class, guess what! Standing in the coffee shop the card was nowhere to be found!
At least I started the day with giving quite a few people a very good laugh, think the biggest one came from my sister.
It was a bit of a pain as the weekend come with quite a few expenditures, like a surf tablet, mummy’s birthday and my favorite time of the year, Gothenburg book fair. At times like this it’s nice to have friends and family, Da studybuddy paid for my coffee and gave me some cash to tidy me over until I reached Gotham. Once there mummy let me borrow money that I then just make a bank transfer for, the magic of smartphones! So, problem solved.
After running some errands on the way home from the station, where the train arrived right on time, I pulled out my fleece jacket that was safely tucked away in my backpack. Guess what I found!?!
Oh well, even if the problem was solved, it’s still so much nicer to have access to your own money.
There’s an election on for all of us in the European Union. I’m the first one to admit that the interest is low and from the beginning I wasn’t interested in Sweden joining the union at all.
However, I’m not a big fan of the direction that Europe is taking, extreme groups to both left and right are gaining ground and taking advantage of their positions. Some group’s see themselves as being correct and right and with that view they allow themselves to use violence against people that don’t agree with their way of thinking.
Some people take advantage of the current financial situation, using it as a way to close our borders and decide that certain groups are not welcome.
I think that we should remember that once upon a time Europe was poor and over-crowded, we could solve this by emigration. A part of why we are were we are is because of that, we should give other people a chance to do the same.
We have people that say that if you aren’t Scandinavian white and of the same Christian believe that we are raised with in Sweden you are a bad person, violent and stupid because you don’t know better.
We have people that say that if you don’t think like us you are an idiot and we are allowed to use violence and hate against you. We are allowed to take your right to free speech away because we don’t approve of what you are saying and thinking.
Because of all these people that think that they know better than everyone else. Because of the people that judge people based on how they look, what god they believe in, where they are from or what political view they have. Because of all these people I made sure to vote for this upcoming European Union election. I voted for someone that I believe can carry the voice of many people, no matter what.
