Sonder n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.
Ok, so the one post a day last week didn’t work out, I was to busy with the end of the World Cup and beer…which brought me to a Monday where I kept telling myself that I’m not 25 anymore. Need to remember that more often.
I also managed only one run last week, better than none and it started the running again. I managed yet another lunch-run today. So yes, I feel mighty pleased with myself.
In addition, after what feels like forever with heat, there was rain today. While I was running, it was just drizzling a bit so not too bad running weather. It cooled me off enough for generating a want of soup lunch.
I need to improve my knowledge about my stove, that can’t be counted as new anymore since it’s been a while since the grand kitchen renovation. It has some kind of lock mechanism that I don’t always realize how it activates, and since it happens so seldom it always take me a while to figure out how to unlock the damn thing. Not great when you are on a time schedule and need to get back to work.
Well, all good that ends well. Fingers crossed that get of my butt on Thursday for another run (and that Runkeeper is kinder to me then and stop cutting out).
I left you yesterday with my magical run, after that it was back to work like the diligent little worker I am. Then afterwards I met up with Mr Grumpy II for some yum, yum.
Then after a quick snack I met up with one of the colleagues for Pub quiz…where I had so much fun (and we did real good, the winners scored 25 and we had 22) that I totally forgot to take pictures.
Even though it didn’t end up being a late night, I still accidentally turned my alarm off this morning and did a rush to work (past 7/11 for coffee since I forgot to set the coffee maker last night). In the rush I also forgot all about smoothie and lunch so I had a good excuse for sushi lunch, not too shabby.
Since it’s Friday and I was sent a free gift in the coffee place app, why not another fancy coffee before heading back to the office to sit of the rest of the day?
I did a fairly short day today as my couch was calling my name, and that’s where I spent the evening. Feet up, watching crap TV while playing quality games. It’s what I call the perfect Friday eve, even when friends are trying to convince you to come out and eat dinner at your favourite burger place, the couch wins!
When the alarm went of at 7 am yesterday morning, I had one look out the window, changed the time for 8 and went back to bed. You could see through the window how cold it was outside, and my whole body was just screaming NOOOOOOOOOOO! And when the body says no, you have to listen.
The hotel I’m staying at wont let me book a room that includes breakfast anymore, so I did the cheap skate thing…leftovers from the flight down (I mean, I had brekkie in the lounge so can’t say I was hungry when on the plane…).
I was real tired all day long, and again the food portions at lunch doesn’t help as food coma hits before you even finish it.
The trip homeward was interesting, as when I was sitting at the airport waiting for my flight, my buddies from Las Palmas let me know that they were coming home for a bit and wondered if I had time to meet up. When I asked when they would arrive, they said: in about two hours. So we landed pretty much at the same time, yey for company on the train 🙂
Then I came home and sat down in front of the PC to give you an update, it just wouldn’t happen, my brain was total mush…so you got it now instead! Better late than never, right?
The train didn’t really get stuck this morning and I made it in good time to enjoy the lounge. It’s a pretty rare occurence so I really want to have the time to enjoy it. Breakfast anyone?
The flight left on time, arrived on time and I had perfect timing to the train on the other side, fantastic. And as I got of the train the sun was shining, imagine that all my Swedish peeps, remember what that feels like?
Then it went downhill from there, at least when it came to the weather. I hadn’t been in the office for long when the first thunderstorm hit, nice to be indoors when it happened and it made for pretty pictures.
Taking the morning flight mean that there’s not that long until it’s time for lunch, and for the life of me I can’t get over the German portions…I get overwhelmed every time.
According to the run schedule today is a run day, and I had every intention to go out for a run. I was a bit worried that I would be too tired after work, however after I checked in to my hotel the booty wanted to run, then I looked outside. I’m telling you that German winter rain is worse than Swedish winter rain as again it came with a proper thunderstorm.
As I got into my book, listening to the thunder and rain outside I was real happy that I didn’t give it a go.
To round of this already long day, I went out for a former colleague to this real nice greek place. Note to one self for future restaurant visits…remember to bring your wallet!
I’ve been back at the hotel long enough to finish yet another dirty book and should really try to get some sleep. I’m hoping that the weather will magically be better tomorrow morning, and with the help of even more magic, I will want to go for a morning run.
Waking up eluded me also this morning so it was straight into an intense work shift at the home office as today was only a half-day with the afternoon off. I had to make sure to get as much done as possible while sitting in on an almost two-hour process overview meeting.
After being able to turn the computer off, I hit a quick shower (at this point I was hoping that I would also be washing of the residues of a run, with the sleep habits…didn’t happen) before taking the elevator downstairs to meet up with the old neighbour. When I say old neighbour, it’s not that she’s old, it’s more that we where neighbours back in the days from when I was five until I was 17.
She work not that far from where mother lives so we have started to meet up for lunch every now and then when I’m working from Gotham City. Always nice when your lunch comes with a view.
After nice food and nice chat, it was time for the main event. The whole reason that I got on a train to Gotham on Thursday night instead of Friday…the yearly birthday-movie-date-with-the-niece. It’s real fun to surprise her at school for some me and her time at the movies. She was super happy and excited with problems sitting still on the tram into town.
A part of the movie tradition (I want to belive that the alone time with me is more important than this part, not too sure though) is the any snack you want shopping. We totally go all in on this. I think the adorable part is that both the girls always insist that the left-overs are brought home to the sister that didn’t have their birthday. So left-over snacks is now a tradition with my nieces.
One could think that this post would end with me dropping of my niece with her parents (oh, by the way, we saw The Story of Ferdinand, and I totally recommend it!), instead I went home and changed into my running clothes. So I finally got my Thursday run done.
Feeling mighty pleased with myself.
And then was my day done?
No, then it was dinner time, and as you should when you are in Gotham, we ate shrimps and I celebrated my run with a glass of wine (well, might be on my third one by now).
And then I spent the rest of the night on the couch doing nothing…nah just kidding.
Then I had a planning date with one of my old NZ buddies. She’s taking a trip over to Europe in May, two weeks of us two travelling around so we needed to sort out the dates and stuff like that.
If you want to help, any good ideas on what to do or see in Amsterdam, Berlin, Prag or Vienna are more than welcome 🙂
And now, I will spend the rest of the evening (kind of not that much left of it) on the couch with Candy crush soda. I think I deserved it.
I didn’t get out of bed when I wanted to, even though the running is on and the mood is getting better, I’m still having troubles going to bed (no problem sleeping once I get there though). That creates problems in my scheduling as I naively think that tomorrow is the day…so I had to flag the running session I had planned.
So the morning rushed past, still managed my homemade smoothie though, at the home office before a visit to the ladies doctor (not my favourite, not as bad as the dentist but totally up there with things I don’t enjoy) who did her thing then promptly informed me that she’s about to retire. As I’m quite fond of the lady (even though she’s a ladies doctor) I didn’t take the news too well.
Then it was back home to pick up the stuff that I totally (not) packed last night before heading in to the office, where I promptly enjoyed my fantastic lunch.
The positive thing is that work is finally picking up again, the less positive is the Monday deadline that suddenly appeared. With a half-day planned tomorrow, that’s going to be interesting as the afternoon swished by.
Before finally sinking down in a comfy train seat I needed to pick up some more food and headed to Subway where I ended up behind the kind of people who stand in line for ever and still don’t know what they want when it’s their turn. Absolutely fantastic as my departure time got closer and closer.
I should’ve known there where no rush as there was no train once I hit the platform. And then there was no train, and no train. Well, after about 20 minutes the train arrived and we were allowed on. Delayed train on single track stretches are the death of me since you constantly end up behind slower trains…slooooow trains.
We finally arrived to Gotham about 51 minutes later than the original arrival time, with delays like that I rather it be a full hour, since then you at least get some money back on the ticket.
That delay also killed all hopes about a late nite run, as it was just too late and I was too tired. So I’ve just spent the rest of the night on mother dearest couch in front of the telly, with the hope of a better tomorrow that includes a run.
